What’s On My Palette | Studio Log - Mar 9-15
Earlier this week, I wasn’t sure how much studio time I’d actually get. We’ve all been either recovering from or falling into a sinus infection, so expectations were… LOW. But I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised (and honestly, a little proud) that I got anything creative done at all!
🎨What’s On My Palette is a recurring studio series where I share the art supplies, creative workflow, and behind-the-scenes of my current illustration projects. Perfect for artists, stationery lovers, and creative entrepreneurs curious about process and materials.

With COZY at the heart of my ever-growing to-do list, I let myself focus only on what felt restorative, leaving the rest for next week when I’m fully back on my feet.
This week, that looked like flipping through magazines and old books, slowly pushing papers around my desk, deciding what to include in a Spring heART journal… and then actually assembling [and filling] it!
Collecting bits of paper, books, and magazines to use for the heART journal.
Moving papers around my desk deffo counts as creative work this week. ;)
As a paper lover, it’s truly one of my favorite creative tasks.
As for the 75 Art Challenge… I’ll be honest, I’ve hit the point where it’s starting to feel more like a chore than a joy. I only finished two new drawings this week, but with about two weeks left, I’ve taken some time to recalibrate. I made a final list of motifs I actually want to draw—not just following the original plan for the sake of it.
Because if I want to avoid burnout, I have to keep my work flexible. I’m allowed to change the rules.
I’m just not allowed to quit.
Sketching and shading are good for my busy brain.

Sick weeks tend to mean that as soon as the kids are at school, I grab my iPad and head straight to the COUCH, COUCH, COUCH! ;)
Painted papers for the heART journal cover.
Following energy levels, not expectations.
Only what felt restorative made the list this week.
I'm just so inspired by Rachel Phillips and her heART journals that I’ve fully adopted them for our family!
It’s the most fun way to put my ever-growing paper collection to good use.
Painted paper palettes in serene Spring hues for the heART journal cover.
Two drawings is still showing up.
Simply adjusting the plan so I can keep going.

Thanks to Rachel and her wonderful heART journals, I no longer feel overwhelmed by being the memory keeper for our kids’ childhoods.
These techniques + ideas are so suited to my rhythms and aesthetics that when I first found them, I nearly cried. ;)
Arranging, assembling, and stitching it all together with a book awl and leather cording.
Letting it be simple. Letting it be enough.
Scrappy. Unique. Sustainable.
And somehow still so beautiful. ✨
Having something handmade to hold our memories like this feels… priceless.
This week was slower than expected, softer than planned…
But still full in its own way.
On to the next.
Xo,
Sarah
